VR training: Poclain health and safety — Training an apprentice to design VR training
Context
Poclain Hydraulics takes on more than a hundred new operators a year and wanted to strengthen its safety induction through a “risk hunt” serious game.
Stakes
Rebuild the experience — 3D, UX, UI — while training an apprentice in the ways of XR design at the same time: a project goal and a teaching goal at once.
My role
No hands-on design from me here: I supervised and mentored my apprentice, who produced the user journeys and the interfaces. I assessed his skills, taught him VR practice, let him work on his own with regular check-ins, then reviewed and challenged his work before it went to the developers.
Outcome
A rethought experience, with a 70% drop in accidents reported by the client, and an apprentice who genuinely grew into the role.
